Are Therapy Intensives Right for You?

By now, you may be feeling curious about therapy intensives or even wondering if this could be the kind of support you’ve been looking for.

This post is here to help you answer that question.

Because while therapy intensives can be incredibly powerful, they’re not the right fit for everyone. The goal is to help you make a thoughtful, informed decision about what will best support your healing.

Who Are Therapy Intensives a Good Fit For?

Therapy intensives tend to be especially helpful for people who are ready to go deeper.

You might be a good fit if:

  • You feel stuck in patterns that haven’t shifted with traditional therapy
  • You’re ready for focused, intentional time dedicated to your healing
  • You want to work through a specific issue, trauma, or life transition
  • You’re motivated for change and willing to engage in deeper internal work
  • You’re a highly sensitive person, deep feeler, or therapist who wants more than surface-level support
  • You have a full schedule and need a format that works better than weekly sessions

Many clients come to intensives because they don’t want to wait months—or years—to experience meaningful change.

What Does “Ready” for an Intensive Mean?

Readiness isn’t about being perfectly stable or having everything figured out.

It’s more about:

  • Feeling open to exploring your inner world
  • Having enough internal or external support to process what comes up
  • Being willing to stay present with your experience, even when it’s uncomfortable
  • Wanting something to shift—not just intellectually, but emotionally and somatically

You don’t have to do this perfectly. You just have to be willing.

Who Might Not Be a Good Fit Right Now?

Therapy intensives are deep, immersive experiences, and because of that, they require a certain level of stability and support.

An intensive may not be the best fit right now if:

  • You’ve experienced a recent mental health crisis
  • You’ve had recent hospitalization, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts
  • You’re currently experiencing psychosis or significant instability

In these cases, more consistent, ongoing support is often the safest and most appropriate place to begin.

That said, every situation is unique. If you’re unsure, we can always talk through what would best support you.

Do I Need to Stop My Current Therapy?

Not at all.

Therapy intensives work beautifully as an adjunct to ongoing therapy.

If you already have a therapist, we can collaborate (with your permission) to ensure your care is coordinated and supportive. Many clients use intensives to:

  • Work through a specific block or trauma
  • Deepen their existing therapy work
  • Create momentum that carries into their weekly sessions

You don’t have to choose one or the other.  Both can complement each other in meaningful ways.

Can I Combine Intensives with Weekly Sessions?

Yes, and for many people, this is an ideal approach.

An intensive allows us to do deep, focused work in a short period of time. Ongoing sessions then provide space to:

  • Integrate what came up
  • Apply insights to real life
  • Continue building regulation and support

This combination can create both depth and sustainability in your healing process.

What If I Don’t Have Time for Weekly Therapy?

This is one of the reasons many people choose intensives.

If your schedule makes it difficult to commit to weekly sessions—due to work, travel, or other responsibilities—an intensive can offer a more flexible and efficient format.

Some clients even treat their intensive like a personal retreat:

  • Taking time off work
  • Booking a nearby Airbnb or hotel
  • Creating intentional space to focus fully on their healing

Are Therapy Intensives a “Quick Fix”?

No.

While therapy intensives can lead to significant shifts in a short period of time, they are not a shortcut or a replacement for the ongoing process of growth and healing.

What they can do is:

  • Help you move through something that has felt stuck
  • Create momentum
  • Offer a deeper level of insight and emotional processing

From there, the work continues—often with more clarity, ease, and direction.

How Many Days Should I Schedule?

This depends on your goals.

Some people experience meaningful shifts in a single 3-hour session. Others benefit from a multi-day intensive to work through more complex or layered experiences.

We’ll decide this together during your intake, based on:

  • What you’re wanting to work on
  • Your capacity and readiness
  • The level of depth you’re hoping for

Can I Do an Intensive Online?

Yes.

I offer both:

  • In-person therapy intensives in Carrollton, Georgia
  • Virtual intensives for clients located in Georgia

Online intensives can be just as powerful, especially when you have a private, comfortable space to fully engage in the process.

How Does Payment Work?

Therapy intensives are typically a private pay service and are not usually covered by insurance.

However:

  • You may be able to use out-of-network benefits for partial reimbursement
  • I can provide a superbill (and in some cases submit claims on your behalf)
  • You can use HSA or FSA funds

While intensives are a larger upfront investment, many clients find them to be cost-effective over time due to the depth and efficiency of the work.

A Different Way of Approaching Healing

Therapy intensives aren’t just longer sessions.

They’re a different way of approaching healing—one that prioritizes depth, presence, and meaningful transformation.

For many people, especially those who have already done some therapy and are ready for more, this approach can feel like the missing piece.

Still Not Sure? That’s Okay.

You don’t have to decide on your own.

If you’re feeling curious—but also unsure—we can explore that together in a 60-minute intake session. Click here to schedule. We’ll talk through your goals, your concerns, and whether a therapy intensive feels like the right next step for you.

You deserve support that truly fits you.
